After a quarrel with his wife, a husband desperate to end an argument offers to buy a new car for her. She curtly declines his offer by saying, "That's not quite what I had in mind." Frantically he offers her a new apartment. Again she rejects his offer, "That's not quite what I had in mind." Curious, he asks: "What did you have in mind?" She retorts, "I'd like a divorce." He answers calmly, "I am not a fool just to do that, I hadn't planned on spending quite that much."
와이프하고 부부싸움을 한 남편이 그만 화해해야 되겠다고 생각하고 그녀에게 새 차를 사 주겠다고 제안했다. 그러나 그녀는 그의 제안을 정중하게 거부하며 “그것은 내가 원하던 것이 아니에요”하고 거절했다. 약간 흥분해서 남편은 다시 그녀에게 새 아파트를 사 주겠다고 제안했다. 또 다시 그녀는 “그것도 내가 바라던 것이 아니예요”하며 거절했다. 의아하게 생각한 남편이 “도대체 그럼 원하는 게 뭐요?”하고 물었다. 그녀는 기다렸다는 듯이 “난 이혼을 바래요”하고 쏘아 붙였다. 그러자 남편이 조용히 답하기를 “난 그런 짓을 할 만큼 바보가 아니예요, 그렇게 많은 돈을 쓸 계획은 없거든.”
